"Rep. Al Green Censured as 10 Democrats Side with Republicans Over Trump Speech Protest"

(newspulseusa247)- a rare bipartisan move, ten Democrats joined House Republicans on Thursday to censure Rep. Al Green following his protest during former President Donald Trump’s address to Congress earlier this week. The vote serves as a formal reprimand of the Texas Democrat’s actions, reflecting divisions within his own party over how to respond to the former president’s remarks.read more...

The Democratic Party remains split on its approach to opposing Trump and the new administration, with some members engaging in public demonstrations—such as holding signs, walking out, or boycotting the speech—while others opted for a more reserved stance. House Democratic leaders had advised against disruptive protests, warning that they could be used as political ammunition by Republicans.

Green, 77, interrupted Trump’s speech during the joint session, leading House Speaker Mike Johnson to have him removed from the chamber. The censure, while a significant rebuke, carries no direct consequences beyond a formal condemnation. Once considered rare, censure has become more common in recent years as partisan tensions escalate in Congress.

Thursday’s vote saw 10 Democrats align with Republicans to censure Green, including Ami Bera (CA), Ed Case (HI), Jim Costa (CA), Laura Gillen (NY), Jim Himes (CT), Chrissy Houlahan (PA), Marcy Kaptur (OH), Jared Moskowitz (FL), Marie Gluesenkamp Perez (WA), and Tom Suozzi (NY). Notably, Kaptur, Suozzi, and Gluesenkamp Perez represent districts won by Trump in the last election.

Despite the censure, Green remained defiant, telling reporters Wednesday that he accepted the consequences of his actions and would do it again. Meanwhile, Speaker Johnson condemned Green’s behavior as "shameful and egregious," arguing that his protest disrespected Congress and warranted swift disciplinary action.

With divisions over strategy continuing to surface, Democrats face ongoing challenges in presenting a unified response to Trump’s influence in Washington.read more...
