Trump Tours Boeing Jet, Criticizes Delays in Air Force One Upgrade
Former President Donald Trump recently toured a Boeing aircraft at Palm Beach International Airport, emphasizing the ongoing delays in the delivery of the new Air Force One fleet. His visit was intended to inspect new hardware and technology while calling attention to Boeing’s failure to meet the original delivery timeline.
According to Steven Cheung, White House Communications Director, Trump's visit highlighted the project’s inability to deliver on time, despite previous commitments. The Air Force One fleet, which consists of two modified Boeing 747s, has been in service for over 30 years. Boeing was awarded the contract to develop updated versions, but production setbacks and financial losses have led to significant delays.
Originally scheduled for 2024, the first new Air Force One jet is now expected in 2027, with the second arriving in 2028—potentially during the final year of Trump’s second term, should he return to office.
During an online discussion with Elon Musk on X (formerly Twitter) in 2024, Trump claimed he had successfully negotiated a $1.6 billion reduction in the cost of the project by pressuring Boeing during his first term. Musk, who has been actively involved in government efficiency efforts, is now reportedly working with Boeing to speed up production.
Trump has also renewed interest in changing the color scheme of Air Force One from the traditional light blue to a darker blue design. His initial attempt to make this change was abandoned during President Joe Biden’s tenure due to concerns over additional testing costs and potential delays.
As Boeing continues to struggle with supply chain challenges, Trump’s visit underscores the high stakes surrounding one of the most iconic aircraft in U.S. history.
