During the hearing on U.S. arms control and foreign aid to Europe, Rep. Keith Self, R-Texas, recognized McBride but referred to her as “Mr. McBride.” In response, McBride thanked Self and called him “Madam Chair.”

The committee’s ranking Democrat, Rep. Bill Keating, D-Mass., immediately challenged Self’s remarks, calling them “not decent.” When Self reiterated the misgendering, Keating demanded that he correctly introduce McBride before continuing. Instead, Self struck the gavel and adjourned the hearing.

McBride later expressed disappointment, stating she had been prepared to discuss nuclear nonproliferation and U.S. support for democratic allies in Europe. Self did not respond to requests for comment, but he later defended his actions on social media, citing a belief in recognizing only two sexes.

The incident comes amid ongoing Republican efforts to target McBride, including a resolution introduced by Rep. Nancy Mace, R-S.C., seeking to bar transgender women from using female restrooms in the Capitol.
